Freight traffic along Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway increases manyfold

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 5

By Eldar Janashvili – Trend:

Over 170,000 tons of cargo were transported via Azerbaijani railways along the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway route over first six months of 2020, Trend reports referring to the Azerbaijani Railways CJSC.

This indicator is four times more compared to the first half of 2019, when about 42,000 tons of cargo were handled, the company said.

"During the coronavirus pandemic, it is becoming increasingly clear how important the role of railways is in international freight transport. Despite the restrictions associated with the pandemic, as a result of joint efforts of Azerbaijan with partner countries, rail freight continues as usual," the company said.

The company noted that experts assess rail transport as one of the safest modes of transport currently available in cargo transportation which provides for international and domestic cargo transportation being carried out smoothly.
