BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 30. As many as 800 Iranian trucks will move daily to the Caucasus, Russia and Europe with the opening of a new bridge under construction between Azerbaijan and Iran over the Astarachay River, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs Mehdi Safari told reporters, Trend reports citing Fars News Agency.

He made the remark on the sidelines of the 2022 Tehran International Iran and Black Sea Cooperation Organization Conference on May 30, 2022.

According to Safari, this will also allow activate the Black Sea-Persian Gulf corridor. The annual capacity of this corridor is about 500 million tons. In the first stage, 20 million tons of cargo a year can be transported through the corridor.

“At present, cargo is transported by trucks to the countries around the Black Sea via Turkey,” he said.

The deputy minister also pointed out that Iran current has capacity to transport cargo in 400 containers a day via the Caspian Sea. Within all these potentials, Iran's transit opportunities will increase.

On January 25, 2022, the foundation of a new bridge over the Astarachay River on the border of Azerbaijan-Iran was laid. The construction of the 89-meter-long and 30-meter-wide bridge is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
