OSCE MG co-chair: Armenia does not agree with updated Madrid principles

Armenia does not agree with various points of the updated Madrid principles, OSCE Minsk Group Russian Co-Chair Yuri Merzlyakov was quoted as saying by Armenia Today.

Merzlyakov said recent suggestions made by the group's co-chairs are under consideration, but Armenia has already disagreed on some points.

"However, we are not exacerbating the situation. Several years ago the same situation emerged in regards to the Madrid principles, which Armenia seemingly accepted, although apparently now not completely," he said. The co-chair also noted that the parties reached an agreement on all points of the Madrid principles except four conditions.

He added that this was his last visit to the region as a group co-chair.

French Co-Chair Bernarrd Fassier said the proposals are still being discussed. He added that the parties have periodically reached mutual agreements, and stressed the importance of the talks.

"War cannot be a solution to the conflict. We remain of the opinion that the matter must not be settled by military means. In the event of war, little will change," he said.
