The discovery of three bodies of suspected refugees along the Greek-Turkish Wednesday has brought the week's death count in that area to 12 - and raised fears of a larger tragedy, DPA reported.

Wednesday's discovery by fishermen was again along the Maritsa, or Evros river.

Nine other bodies had been discovered in the area on Monday and Tuesday. Authorities have concluded that the dead died as they tried to illegally cross the river from Turkey into Greece, reported local media.

It is unclear how large the suspected refugee group was and if any of them made it across the river safely.

The area around the Maritsa and the nearby Aegean Sea are popular routes for illegal immigrants trying to access the European Union. Eight dead people were found in the area last October.
