Iran ranks 9th in the world in terms of electricity generation capacity of thermal power plants, Trend reports citing Iranian Energy Ministry.
According to the report, the electricity generation capacity of Iran's TPPs is 69,000 megawatt-hours. China, the US, India, Japan, Russia, Germany, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Indonesia are the top 10 countries in terms of generation capacity of TPPs.
The power generation capacity of all power plants in the world is 7,320 gigawatt-hours. Meanwhile, the capacity of thermal power plants is 4,280 gigawatt-hours.
The total generation capacity of Iran's power plants (thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, and so on) is currently over 86,000 megawatt-hours. About 92 percent of which is accounted for thermal power plants.
So far, 587 units have been built at 129 thermal power plants in Iran. More than 67 percent of Iran's thermal power plants are managed by the private sector.
By the summer of this year, with the construction and launch of 31 new units, 4,750 megawatt-hours will be added to the country's electricity generation capacity.
According to the report, Iran ranks 14th in the world in terms of electricity generation capacity.
