The opening of the first trading on the Exchange of the Astana International Financial Center (AIX) was held with the participation of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakh media reported.

The head of state said that the launch of the Astana International Financial Center (AIFC) is an important step in the consistent sustainable development of Kazakhstan, and that in the future AIFC should become the main financial hub of the region and one of the leading financial centers in Asia.

"AIFC has already given Astana a new status of ‘financial capital’. In the ranking of global financial centers, the position of the city rose by 27 positions over the last year alone," Nazarbayev said.

In his speech, Kazakh president also noted that the national company Kazatomprom, which accounts for about 20 percent of the world uranium market, has issued its first IPO.

"In the future, we plan to put up for sale the assets of Kazakhtelecom, Air Astana, KazMunaiGas and other national companies," Nazarbayev said.

He noted that AIFC should become a catalyst for attracting foreign capital and bring the stock market of Kazakhstan to a new level of development.

AIX was established in 2017 in the framework of the AIFC development. AIX shareholders are AIFC, Goldman Sachs, Shanghai Stock Exchange, Silk Road Fund and NASDAQ, which also provides AIX with a trading platform.
