Azerbaijani Oppositional Party’s Regional Organization Against Boycotting Presidential Elections

Azerbaijan, Lankaran, 4 July / corr. Trend P.Aliyeva / Regional organization of the Azerbaijani oppositional Musavat party is against to boycott the presidential elections. "Musavatis of Lankaran District insist on holding elections even in the most difficult situations and deny the favor of the boycott tactics," Yadigar Sadigov, the chairman of the Lankaran District organization of the party, told Trend on 4 July.

The presidential election will be held in Azerbaijani on 15 October.

The decision to participate in the presidential elections was taken in December 2007and Isa Gambar, the chairman of the party, was nominated at the meeting of Majlis of the party. Musavat party re-raised an issue on participation in the elections after injecting supplements and changes into the Election Code, adopted on 2 June. The decision to discuss this topic at the bodies of the organization was taken at a meeting of the Divan [party presidium] last month.

Sadigov said that the participation in the elections would be discussed at the next meeting of the Council of the Lankaran District organization. "We can say without any doubt that the regional organization will take positive decision because of the mood of party members," he said.

Oppositional Musavat party was established in 1992. Isa Gambar, the chairman of the party, was the speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament (1992-1993) and presidential candidate in the presidential elections held 2003.
