The ruling party of Azerbaijan plans to expand cooperation with the European People's Party (EPP).

The EPP member parties are Party led by Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel, Party led by President of France Nicolas Sarcozy and more than 70 strong parties, Ali Ahmedov, Deputy Chairman and Executive Secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, told reporters on Tuesday. He was speaking at the presentation of book titled "Europe: I fought and I won" by Wilfried Martens, Chairman of the European People's Party and the former PM of Belgium.

Azerbaijan has been heading for integration with Europe, and one of important means to achieve this is the cooperation with the EPP. "As to Martens, he is one of the most authoritative persons in formation of Europe's present-day relations and one of the founders of the European Popular Party. He has been heading the Party since the day it was established. Martens had worked as PM of Belgium for 10 years. This man enjoys a great authority in European policy," Ahmedov said.

Martens' visit to Azerbaijan is indicative of the importance the European People's Party attaches to Azerbaijan. "In my opinion, this will contribute significantly to the process of Azerbaijan's integration with Europe. The book Martens has written is devoted to work, which has been conducted toward formation of Europe's new structure these years, and to his participation in this process", the Executive Secretary said.
