Detained Employee of Newspaper Azadlig Resumes Hunger-Strike

Azerbaijan, Baku, 4 February / corr. Trend K. Zarbaliyeva/ The detained employee of the newspaper Azadlig began his hunger strike once again.

Mirza Sakit resumed his hunger strike on 3 February demanding his transfer to the patient care institution of the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan, his wife Rena Zahidova said.

Sakit refused to eat on 26 January with the similar demands. He stopped the hunger strike on 28 January after an agreement was reached to fulfill his demands.

The Office for the Public Relations of the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice said that Sakit was examined by the doctors at the central board of health of the Ministry of Justice who did not recommend that he be transferred to the patient care institution.

Zahidova said that her husband's condition is serious.

The Public Relations Office of the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice confirmed that Sakit had resumed his hunger strike on 3 February and said that the doctors considered that it was possible for him to have his treatment in the sanatorium of the patient care institution.

Sakit is accused of illegal purchases and the possession of drugs and psychotropic substances and was sentenced to three years imprisonment.
