Minister: Azerbaijan’s Satellite May Accelerate Information Flow in Internet

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend / According to the information provided by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan will transfer $100,000 to the account of UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID), said the Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan, Ali Abbasov, at the recent meeting of the Alliance. According to Mr. Abbasov, the present level of Internet users in the Western World equals 80%, but in the East, this figure does not exceed 20%.

This presents big difficulties regarding information flow. Azerbaijan may eliminate this misbalance through purchasing its own communication satellite. Azerbaijan plans to launch its satellite by 2010. The International Telecommunication Union has already received proposals from Azerbaijan. The Minister said that by 2008 all schools in Azerbaijan will have access to Internet.

The mission of the Global Alliance for ICT and Development is to contribute to transforming the spirit and vision of WSIS into action and promoting the use of ICT for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the UN Millennium Development Goals. The first meeting of the Alliance took place in June 2006 in the capital of Kuala-Lampur with regards to the role of ICT in developing economy and reducing poverty.
