Agriculture in Azerbaijan (January-May 2014)

The agricultural production in Azerbaijan increased by 2.7 percent in January-May, 2014 compared to the same period of 2013 and amounted to 1.128 billion AZN, according to Azerbaijan's State Statistical Committee. The output of products in crop sector fell by 0.6 percent, while the output in the livestock sector increased by 3.1 percent during the reporting period.

Plant growing

The mass sowing of spring crops has almost been completed in Azerbaijan.

A 342,500 hectare area was sown with spring plants, 73,300 hectares - vegetables, 61,500 hectares - potatoes, 61,300 hectares - grains and legumes, 26,800 hectares - melons, 21,100 hectares - cotton, 9,800 hectares - feeding sunflower, 5,500 hectares - sugar beet by June 1.

The areas sown with grains and legumes in Jan.-May, decreased by 13 percent, vegetables - 1.6 percent, potatoes - by 4.8 percent, melons - 3.7 percent and cotton - 8.6 percent. At the same time, the areas sown with feeding sunflower and sugar beet rose by 11.1 and 11.8 percent, respectively.

The country's farms produced 77,900 tonnes of vegetables in January-May, according to the report.

Animal husbandry

The livestock production growth was observed in January-May, 2014, compared to the same period of 2013. Thus, around 174,700 tonnes of meat (in live weight), 753,000 tonnes of milk, 638,100 million eggs and 12,600 tonnes of wool were produced during the reporting period.

Meat production increased by 2.1 percent, milk - by 2.8 percent, eggs - 12.6 percent and wool - 1.5 percent in the country in January-May, compared to the same period of 2013.

The timely livestock and veterinary actions and work conducted to improve the productive qualities of the breed of cattle had a positive impact on the dynamic development of livestock.
