All 47 crew members were forced to abandon the Seattle-based Alaska Ranger after they lost control of its rudder and began taking on water early Sunday in high seas, the Coast Guard said in a statement.
Rescuers pulled 42 people from the water who had managed to stay afloat in life rafts. The coast guard was still looking for a fifth man in the waters about 200 kilometres west of Alaska's Dutch Harbor. It was unclear how the four fishermen died.
