The death toll resulting from cyclone Tomas in Fiji increased to three, the Fiji National Disaster Management Office confirmed on Saturday.

The death toll resulting from cyclone Tomas in Fiji increased to three, the Fiji National Disaster Management Office confirmed on Saturday.
Anthony Blake, operations officer of the Disaster Management Office, told a press conference in Suva on Saturday that the military had found the body of a Rabi Islander, Xinhua reported. He said the man lost his life when a tree fell on his house at the height of the cyclone.

A total of 318 houses have been reported to be damaged by Cyclone Tomas.

There are 97 homes totally destroyed in the Northern Division while in the Eastern Division 174 houses were damaged, 47 houses were totally destroyed.
The current assessments carried out by the Disaster Management Office indicated that Northern Lau and Central Lau groups are the worst affected by the cyclone.

He said that Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama was up in the Northern Division conducting the ground assessment himself to see what is needed.

Fiji's Disaster Management Office said those worst hit by Cyclone Tomas will have to live on rations for the next few months.

The evacuated people were gradually starting to return to their homes
