Iran self-sufficient in all aspects of oil industry: Iranian MP

An Iranian lawmaker says the Islamic Republic has attained self-sufficiency in all aspects of the oil industry by using domestic workforce and experts, Press TV reports.

"Iran oil industry, using domestic workforce and experts, has been able to stand on its own feet in all stages of production, extraction, development and sale of petroleum products, and...has achieved independence and self-sufficiency," Nasser Soudani said on Saturday.

The lawmaker, who is also deputy chairman of Iran Majlis Energy Committee, added that sanctions imposed against Iran's oil industry have failed to undermine the Iranian economy, and on the contrary, have reduced Tehran's dependence on oil revenues.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad inaugurated the country's biggest gasoline plant at Shazand Imam Khomeini Refinery in the central Markazi Province on Friday.

He said the project was proof that Iran has achieved self-sufficiency in oil refinery construction and does not need foreign assistance in this regard.

Shazand Imam Khomeini Refinery contains the country's biggest gasoline production hub with a production capacity of 16 million liters (ml) of gasoline per day.

At the beginning of 2012, the United States and the European Union imposed new sanctions on Iran's oil and financial sectors with the goal of preventing other countries from purchasing Iranian oil and conducting transactions with the Central Bank of Iran.

The illegal US-engineered sanctions have been imposed based on the unfounded accusation that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran rejects the allegation, arguing that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
