Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 7 / Trend M. Moezzi/

Iran has produced 10 per cent more cotton than last year, Sadegh Khalilian Iran's Minister of Agriculture has told ILNA news.

Iranian cotton growers were making good progress until tariffs on imports were dropped, according to Mr Khalilian. When domestic producers couldn't compete with imports, the cotton cultivation dropped.

Reinstating the tariff on imported cotton plus an increase in world cotton prices, have helped domestic producers this past year, Mr. Khalilian told the ILNA. With the government's continuing support of cotton production, Iran should be able to fulfil its domestic textile industry's demand for the fibre.
