The Saudi foreign minister comments about Iran and its ownership of three strategic Persian Gulf islands is part of a greater campaign to define Iran as a regional threat, MP Avaz Heidarpour said.
As part of the comments he made on the floor of the Majlis, Mr. Heidarpour recommended that the Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal review history and geography books to see who has historically owned Abu Musa, and Greater and Lesser Tunb Islands, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reports.
Al-Faisal criticized what he called Iran's "occupation" of the three islands and said it had pushed the Persian Gulf into a crisis.
Iran claims historical ownership of the three tiny islands, and says its claim over them was interrupted only by Britain's occupation in the early 20th century.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) says the three islands belong to it. The claim was rejected by the United Nation's Security Council.
